GG S1 E4 Recap: Fire Walks With Z
The episode opens with Gossip Girl who is really on her high horse this morning saying she’s still around and she’s not a person, she’s a revolution. She tells us it’s Zoya’s birthday (much to Zoya’s disappointment). While most of us were chomping at the bit to get our learner’s permits, she’s still in bed, bemoaning the day ahead.
Max is MIA and his friends who were probably initially grateful for a bit of a breather are now becoming frustratedly concerned. Where is he? Even Mr. Caparros, who I feel like I should just start referring to as Rafa because it’s such a cool name (but it feels too informal!), is checking in on Max’s social media for any sign of his whereabouts. A story. A tagged image. But nothing’s been posted since the night of the play when he was basically a human wrecking ball for all of the relationships in his vicinity. Julien clicks on her ring light to go live on Instagram but quickly turns it off. She looks at a photo of her mom longingly. She decides to go au naturel and encourages her internet friends to do the same. Monet and Luna watch on, unenthused, and are already plotting to ruin Zoya’s birthday and life (just guessing). She’s in the process of texting her little sister a sweet birthday message but walks out of her room to discover that Davis’s not-so-secret lover, Lola, has prepared a breakfast feast. She deletes the text and enters the dining area. Lola’s coming at Julien with a lot of energy considering it’s first thing in the morning, and Julien tries to be a good sport, but it’s obviously a little weird and probably pretty unexpected to see her there. Davis checks in to see if she feels okay about everything, and she’d probably prefer to take things a little slower, but he’s happy. He also has a different hairstyle than this regular buzzcut, and I am INTO IT. Julien says she can’t stay because she already has breakfast plans, and Davis looks disappointed. She grabs a pumpkin muffin from the table and leaves. I am so ready for fall. I might bake my own pumpkin muffins and crank the thermostat all the way down to a temperature I can wear a sweatshirt in just to pretend it’s not an inferno outside for 15 minutes. Anyone else? Davis tells Julien he’s thinking of her today, and she says she’s thinking of him, too. They hug, and it’s a sweet moment. Feel like there’s a little more to the story here…
Mr. Lott is asking Zoya where his briefcase is as a ploy to get her to the kitchen table where he’s prepared a modest surprise — her favorite bagel with a candle in it! She’s kind of mad at him for it, and I’m mad because he’s actually being fun FOR ONCE but then we learn Zoya’s mom died giving birth to her. For Zoya, this day is anything but a reason to celebrate. I hate my birthday, too, but not for this reason. Yikes. Still devastated after all of these years, she wants it to go unnoticed, but Gossip Girl has already broadcast her birthday to the masses. And the culprit, Zoya alleges, is Julien. Someone slides an envelope under the door and Z just knows it’s something bad, but Mr. Lott says it’s to sign up for trick or treaters and that feels like a lie! It’s probably creepy cell phone pics from that weirdo doorman. Anyways, Zoya’s being a very moody teenager rn, and it is not my favorite look on her.
Earlier we saw a text that Obie scheduled a delivery of some sort, and we now know that he’s gone totally over the top for his lady’s bday! He’s arranged for a few food trucks to post up outside of the school this morning. Honestly, that is really cute. I’d be so excited, but I’m also one of those psychos that starts shoveling food in my mouth pretty much as soon as I wake up lol. Aki skates up to the scene and thinks it’s all a bit overkill, but he isn’t exactly one to be giving relationship advice right now. Aki immediately launches into his relationship woes, and Obie tells him that his and Audrey’s sins are not the same. In his opinion, what she did was way worse. But Obie doesn’t know that Aki made out with one of their mutual friends, or that the friend is Max! Also, considering what an outburst Max made at the bar, it’s shocking that Gossip Girl didn’t somehow get a hold of this information and blast it to the masses. But she’s been tight-lipped, which tells me she’s none the wiser. Missed opportunity! Obie gives Aki advice, and Aki says, “Second time for everything” which feels like a hint that he might test the waters with Max again...
Audrey and Julien are walking to school, and Audrey is hurling enough compliments at Julien for her to recognize she’s obviously trying to butter her up to talk about something. Audrey expresses her confusion over Aki’s infidelity. He never presented her with the information that he’s bi, which I’m guessing is because he’s in the process of coming to terms with that himself (so he likely hasn’t brought her into the conversation yet). She thinks what he’s done is worse because yes, she slept with Max, but he’s a member of the opposite sex and that is “normal.” Aki made out with a member of the same sex, which, in her opinion, is not. She fears Aki’s living some kind of double life that she knows nothing about, but Julien assures her he probably doesn’t know how to talk to her for fear of how she’ll react. She advises Audrey to let him talk without judging him and to avoid Max until they speak to one another. Audrey jaunts off to the crepe truck when she sees Aki who grabs his skateboard and bolts out of there as quickly as possible.
Julien approaches Monet and Luna who are absolutely appalled at her new filter-free lifestyle. Julien wants to rid herself of the restraints of perfection and embrace authenticity, vulnerability, reality. But Monet and Luna are not having it. Her followers and classmates want to witness an unattainable lifestyle, and she needs to give that to them to remain “on top.” Luna mentions that Julien’s up for a spot in Vogue, and she doesn’t bite. Actually, she wants to take a bite of a crepe and challenges Luna to film her eating in public (a big no no!). They can’t believe she’s so far gone, but Luna and her perfect eyebrows supposedly have a missile in place to restore order. Monet doesn’t seem convinced.
Zoya arrives at school and Obie is so proud of his birthday display only to immediately pack it up upon learning Z doesn’t celebrate her birthday. I’m sure it’s gotta be a bummer, but go get a breakfast taco and perk up, Zoya! Tacos fix everything! I recognize there have already been a lot of food references here and it’s because I’m pretty hungry SRY. Julien walks up and wishes her little sister a happy birthday and seems sincere, but Zoya is immediately defensive. She accuses Julien of telling GG it’s her bday, but she swear she didn’t. Zoya doesn’t believe her and it’s already been a pretty explosive morning. Monet and Luna watch on and then follow Julien inside school.
In the teachers’ lounge, Ms. Keller is complaining that she barely has time to do her real job because playing GG is taking over her life. She has an opportunity to submit a piece as an undiscovered writer in The Paris Review, but she’s too consumed with her alter ego to find the time to work on anything else. Jordan and Wendy offer to take over, but Keller, a diehard control freak, is apprehensive. Jordan insists getting published is more important than trying to wield power over a bunch of teenage brats, and there’s a tinge of jealousy as they remind her they’ve never gotten to play GG personally and this was supposed to be their thing, not just hers. This is gonna be a FLOP.
Zoya is walking down the hallway and Luna approaches her and says Julien doesn’t want her there anymore. Z doesn’t believe her, but Luna says Julien’s done something that’s also kind of her fault and tells her she’s sorry (she’s not). I bet this has to do with the video GG sent Julien! Zoya continues down the hall and no one’s staring her down, so whatever it is hasn’t gone public…yet. Aki and Audrey crash into each other as they’re both trying to track down Max. They both lie about why they’re on their phones. Their interaction is as awkward as it is fleeting and each go their separate ways. Rafa walks up to Ms. Keller and asks if she’s gotten any tips on Max because he’s skipped class for a week and “owes him an essay.” Rafa might as well be yelling this out. I don’t know why they keep discussing GG stuff in plain sight. They should’ve been caught 2.5 episodes ago. He insists he isn’t trying to bring down the operation, just figure out where Max is. The teachers say they’re on it and depart.
Obie finds Zoya in the courtyard and unnecessarily apologizes for her over the top birthday celebration. How was he supposed to know it was a traumatic day for her?! He tells her he still wants to celebrate her, and after suggesting dinner with friends and music (and getting shot down AGAIN), he asks if they can have dinner at her house with her dad. She calls to check with her dad and Mr. Lott is pretty curt. He says he can’t talk because he is dealing with a “client thing” but he is a bad liar! He tells her that someone tipped off the housing board that they’re squatting in her grandma’s apartment, and things are not looking good. NOT COOL, LUNA!
Luna sends the tip in with a copy of the eviction notice to GG, and Wendy and Jordan catch it. They are elated. They cowrite a decent caption to the post and whip up a fun new word, glitz-krieg. I’m honestly impressed, but I know it won’t last long. They post to the GG instagram story but block Ms. Keller from seeing it so she doesn’t lose focus on her writing submission. Also, they don’t want her to spoil their fun by taking back control of the account.
Rafa has been anxiously scanning the hallways in search of Max, and upon hearing commotion on the street, he walks out of the building to find Max. He’s exiting a hospital shuttle loaded up with pills (I’m assuming) and kissing all the nurses, male and female. Classic Max! This is ILLEGAL but I love that he goes straight from the hospital to school. Rafa goes back inside and who knows if Max notices him. He’s clearly in a state.
The students’ phones are going off alerting them to a new GG post, and Jordan and Wendy are high off of the power they now possess. Obviously no one pays them very much attention, so this is a real first for them.

Julien is hashing out the Gossip Girl blast in the bathroom with her trusty sidekicks, and again, she doesn’t believe the hype either…at first. She and Zoya have been civil. Things have been totally fine! But, like always, they ultimately persuade her to go along with one of their plans to get rid of her little sister. Zoya’s already taken her boyfriend. What’s next?! They convince her to throw a party tonight ON Zoya’s birthday to deflect any attention from coming her way, and they say to call her dad and ask for a favor. Julien follows the girls’ orders and calls Davis. Please GOD can I have a Billie Eilish guest appearance??? I don’t think it’s too much to ask.
On the Met steps, Zoya is seated towards the bottom, an obvious nod to her fall from grace, and Obie approaches her. Zoya can’t believe Julien would stoop so low as to get her evicted from her apartment after she begged her to come to NYC. Upon seeing Julien’s IG story about a party she’s throwing that night, Zoya decides to throw a party of her own. Obie, growing visibly uncomfortable, tries to reel her in, but she’s too far gone. She forces him to help her stage a last minute rager, and as Obie skates up, she invites him before the others get a chance. But Audrey overhears and says he will be going to Julien’s party. And he’s like “I can do both” and she’s like “THE HELL YOU CAN” and anyways it doesn’t end great. This part had me 💀
Julien and her gaggle of besties are golf clapping (? lol) and ecstatic, and apparently Davis has come through with a performer for J’s party, Princess Nokia. I would like to say I have one whole song of hers saved on my Spotify so I am #young #cool #basicallyarichperson? Anyways, the song is “Sugar Honey Iced Tea” and I should prob add to the #hotgirlsummer3 playlist because it’s a real good time. (Edit: I added it!) Hell bent on outdoing her sister, Zoya frantically tries to come up with someone to make a guest appearance at her party. She’s been sucked into Julien’s BS who was sucked in by Monet and Luna and Obie wants no part of it. He says he’ll see her after school and ditches her on the steps just as a tiny child approaches with a cup and saucer (again, ???) who assures her he can help. His name is Milo Sparks, and he literally tells her to google him and wanders off with his teacup. Is this…? It can’t be. Nope.
Inside the school, Rafa is swimming laps in the pool and can I just say, I forgot how much of an appreciation I have for men’s swimming. I was recently reminded when I started watching the Tokyo Olympics. Personal preference but swimmers have *the* best bodies IMO. Rafa is doing the Lord’s work AMIRIGHT? Anyways, he’s accosted in the gym’s shower by Max who apparently has some kind of radar for when his favorite teacher is in a state of undress. To say he is looking a little disheveled is putting it nicely. Rafa was likely the last person to see Max before his weeklong bender, which would likely reflect poorly on him if anyone found out. He’s clearly concerned about Max, and who wouldn’t be? He is messy AF. Max again tries to make a move on Rafa, and he shoves him away which only encourages Max. He says if Rafa doesn’t hook up with him, he’ll just tell everyone he did anyways. This is textbook Chuck Bass right here! Rafa will not be threatened and shoves him off once more before exiting the shower.

In the hallway, Ms. Keller happens upon a downtrodden Zoya. She wishes Z a happy birthday and asks what’s going on with her. I can’t tell if she actually cares or if she’s just trying scratch the itch of fishing for intel so she can maintain her role as the school’s unofficial blabbermouth. Both, I guess? Zoya tells her the cold war between her sister is ongoing, but Ms. Keller learns she doesn’t actually know what Zoya’s talking about because the other teachers blocked her from seeing the GG post on her personal account! Who do they think they are??She tries to console Zoya and says that people like her and Z have to constantly prove they belong, which is interesting considering she’s the ringleader of this circus. She clearly doesn’t understand the role she plays in all of this. No, she doesn’t have the same financial resources, but she wields her weapons with just as much ferocity as the others, and the end result is just as damaging. She’s no better than they are. She offers Zoya some advice that I would consider to be good if she weren’t a two-faced LIAR. Zoya leaves and Keller tries to check the GG instagram story, but there are no updates. She storms up to Jordan and confronts him outside of the school about blocking her, and he says he’s doing it for her own good. He promises to let her back in once she submits her writing assignment. Honestly, he seems to be enjoying all of this a little too much. Keller is not pleased.
Zoya is in a large study and OMG THIS TINY CHILD IS GEORGINA SPARKS’ CHILD?????? Please refer back to the 1st episode recap where I *freaking* called this happening. Reminder, Georgina convinced Dan that Milo was their lovechild by providing a fake DNA test and having him sign his birth certificate omgomgomg I can’t believe I called this.
I am dying at the photos of Georgina with various dictators and how the camera pans over to one of her and Elon Musk LOL. Omg I can’t handle this.
He’s talking about a coup, but Zoya says she doesn’t want to play dirty. Milo tells her most people cancel themselves if you scroll back far enough (which makes me want to delete all of my social media accounts ASAP because he aint wrong).
Julien and Audrey are playing dress up in her closet when phone notifications come pouring in about a tweet 13 year old Julien made that was bad bad bad. Princess Nokia cancels, and so do plenty of guests. She decides to play the sympathy card by posting that today is actually the day of her mother’s passing and that this is a charitable event. Zoya is fuming. In her opinion, this is nothing more than a stunt. Obie is about at his wits end, and so is Zoya, but for different reasons. She tells Milo to move to phase 2 as she sees her dad and then Davis and Julien arriving at their building. The dads want to know why they’re learning about a war between their daugthers from their assistants. The girls blame each other, leaving the dads with no choice but to pull a classic parenting move: forcing them to share. This will now be a joint party, or there will be no party at all. RUH ROH. The girls begrudgingly agree to it. On the way out, Julien overhears Zoya and her dad discussing how they probably can’t go back to Buffalo, and she remembers the video GG sent her a few episodes back. She forwards it to Monet, and even if she has a change of heart, you know Monet won’t. The video will definitely get out this time.
At the joint party at Webster Hall, Zoya is already on the step and repeat taking photos when Jules arrives. She insists they take a sister pic, and things are already preeetty heated. Zoya gets a text that someone (LUNA) set up a Go Fund Me to help with her housing crisis. Zoya signals to Milo to fire away, and Julien’s phone starts blowing up with Venmo payments for drugs, blowjobs, urine, and other fun stuff! Also, while all of this is happening, the teachers have made their way into the party. Eww! Zoya is frustrated, and Obie tries to get her to dance which I would kind of love to see because I feel like he’s prob not very good at it and it’s prob v cute. She’s too focused on beating Julien at her own game that she can’t see what a good thing she has right in front of her. She is totally blowing this, and at some point, she’s going to run out of chances with him.
Aki shows up, and Obie asks if he’s spoken with Audrey yet. He says he hasn’t, and Obie says maybe he should do it ASAP because there’s a new guy wrapped around Audrey’s arm. I’m confused…didn’t they kiss and make up last episode? Or has Audrey had more time to think about things and is no longer okay with Aki’s secret? Audrey’s date shakes Aki’s hand and says he stalked him on instagram. Audrey forgot to do her due diligence. It’s pretty hard to make Aki jealous when her date is fawning all over him and admitting that he stalked him on instagram?? WTF. She makes a snarky remark to Aki about choices and wanders off with her date.
Outside of the venue, Max is trying to get in but is told his name isn’t on the list. A bouncer shoves him pretty aggressively considering this is a party for teenagers. It isn’t like he’s whipping a gun out or something? Rafa runs up and grabs Max from the clutches of this bearded man. He said he called Davis and told him to take Max off the list. He didn’t want Max bringing drugs to the party, I guess? Rafa is concerned for Max’s well being and throws his Altoid tin of drugs out and OH MY GOD AM I CLAIRVOYANT? (YES)

Rafa drags Max out of there, but not before Max can insult him for being a broke school teacher. They always reach for the low-hanging fruit, these kids.
Zoya’s dad approaches Davis and asks if he can join him at the bar. He orders a seltzer, and Davis offers to be his DD if he wants to cut loose a little. I thought this was really nice but remembered they can all take the subway. I mean it’s still a nice gesture, but you know. Mr. Lott tells Davis he’s “never really been a ‘go hard’ kind of guy” and everyone watching is like “yeah no 💩” Davis asks if they’re actually getting evicted, and Mr. Lott says the building is trying to kick them out. Davis makes another nice gesture where he offers to help, but before he can finish, Mr. Lott — a very proud man — interrupts him and says they’ll be fine. Davis tells his former arch nemesis that he thinks the girls not getting along is a good thing because it forces them to connect in some sort of weird modern family experiment.
Zoya finds Milo and attacks him for being MIA, but he says his plan is time released. Like melatonin? Apparently someone’s been drugging up the food Julien’s eating, and she’s about to get pretty sick. She’s also acting drunk, and when Obie tries to ask for a ceasefire, she slurs her speech and gives a big fat “NOPE.”
Ms. Keller finds Jordan and Wendy and is literally YELLING at them because they aren’t posting anything from the party. Jordan yells back. I am freaking out. How no one has figured them out yet is absolutely beyond me. Keller spirals and confesses that she was 6 months shy of getting her MFA before dropping out. Struggling with impostor syndrome, she feels like a failure. In her mind, Gossip Girl is the only thing she’s good at. Jordan takes her by the hand and hauls her out of there to help her get some writing done. Wendy says she’s got everything under control, but she also just busted a flask out from her underwear soooo IDK.
On the dance floor, Audrey is on the prowl. She’s trying to grind up on her date and stare down Aki to make him jealous, but she’s having a difficult time because he’s only there to see Princess Nokia and apparently he’s also gay LOL.
This throws Audrey for a loop and omg do you even know the number of times this has happened to me.
My neighbor across the hall in college. One of my first BFFs in Nashville. I can’t count the times. And I’m pretty good at math, so.
Audrey beelines it for Aki and he seems pretty chill considering she’s been trying to rile him up all night. Maybe he knew all along that her date was actually gay. Frustrated, she asks him point blank if he’s gay and promises not to judge. He cringes at the question and she asks again, saying she knows she hasn’t been the most sensitive because she was scared to hear his response. He tells her he isn’t sure.
Princess Nokia is backstage and Julien’s so messed up, she actually asks her to drink some water. Apparently Julien is supposed to give a speech before she performs? This will not go well. Milo shows up in his tiny tracksuit and gold chain (AWW!) and asks Luna what’s going on. She shows him the Gossip Girl video of Zoya that she’s going to share with the world once she gets her technological issues sorted out. Milo runs off to Zoya who is just about to ask him to call things off, but upon receiving this new information is reeling. Obie approaches her, but she can’t talk. She’s too busy trying to salvage her reputation. He tells her if she’s playing with fire, she’s likely to get burned. He doesn’t understand why she’s a completely different person than she was a month ago, but she grows increasingly hostile and can’t be bothered with his concerns. She brushes past him and runs towards the stage.
Julien’s adoring fans clap as she enters the stage. As she’s giving her speech, she seems relaxed but not full-blown drunk; however, when she refers to her mother as “Calloway Marion” her dad knows something is up. Julien tells everyone that her and Zoya’s mother had 2 sides, and basically Zoya got the ratchet side. Zoya stands motionless, other than her quivering lip. She knows her fate has been sealed. The video plays of Zoya, and she’s vandalizing the inside of her old school by spray painting the walls. But things take a turn when her co-conspirators lock her in the chem lab and call her names, primarily “Mother Killer.” Monet and Luna take all of this in with the same glee of a parent witnessing their child’s first steps. Julien and everyone else watch on, horrified. Zoya stands at the front of the stage, whimpering. It is gut wrenching to see. No one says anything, not even Zoya’s dad who has apparently been stunned into silence. Julien motions for Luna to stop the video, but she pretends not to hear her. She walks off the stage to put an end to this and eventually returns to the spotlight, stating she had no idea they were playing that version. But she shouldn’t have instructed them to play anything. She demands the guests pull out their phones and she confesses on camera that she is a bully, but she vows to change. She invites them to make remixes of he video and send it to Gossip Girl or do whatever it is that will make things right. She again centers herself in the apology without actually saying “I’m sorry.” Poor Zoya looks like a puppy that someone kicked. She stands alone in the crowd as Princess Nokia gets on stage and WHOA what an awkward act to follow. But she’s a pro. She acts like nothing happened, and so does everyone in the vicinity. They clap and cheer like one of Zoya’s worst moments wasn’t blasted out to all of her peers.

Aki and Audrey are in the stairwell, and Audrey forces the issue. She tells him she didn’t sleep with anyone but Max. Aki, who is looking FOINE btw (I’m telling you I have such a crush on him that there’s an 80% chance he’s gay IRL), tells her he kissed Max and he didn’t regret it. So is the threesome the next episode, or…?
Rafa is escorting Max down the sidewalk to his dads’ house. Max is resistant, but Rafa says some people don’t have 1 dad that loves them, let alone 2. Roy needs him right now, and Max should be there for him. Max apologizes and leans in and asks Rafa what he needs. He tells him he needs him to get it together before he finds someone else to care about 👀I can’t tell if he’s flirting or being sincere, but the way his hand grazes his leg leaves me like 👀👀👀👀👀
Julien and Zoya are having a long overdue heart to heart. Zoya sobs while telling her what happened at her former school the day of the video. She feels enormous guilt because she truly believes she was the cause of her mom’s death, but Julien assures her that is not the case. She insists that they celebrate this day. Zoya appreciates her sisterly advice, and I hope they stick it out this time because I’ve had enough of this! Their dads pop up across the venue, and you know Mr. Lott is dying to rip some throats but they see their daughters hugging and are immediately cool with things? Lol K.
Jordan is on Ms. Keller’s sofa, and they have a lingering moment. Not sure what that’s all about…He crafts the final GG post of the day as Keller works on her writing submission.
Julien walks Zoya over to Obie and says Z wants to dance with him. He apologizes for the trauma she experienced in Buffalo and that she had to relive it all over again tonight. He offers to get her a suite and a massage and I’m like “YES GIRL DO IT” at my computer but we all know her dad wouldn’t go for that. Besides, she wants to spend the rest of the evening with Julien. Zoya apologizes, and it’s very sincere. I guess she got that gene from her dad because Julien…okay, I won't ruin the nice moment! They kiss on the dance floor and Julien watches from a distance.
Across town, Max is at Rafa’s doorstep. Rafa’s giving mixed signals because he allows him inside the apartment but then is all “you shouldn’t be here.” Max, obviously distraught, says he took his advice and things didn’t go very well. Rafa seems like he wants to hug him at one point. Max moves in and kisses Rafa, and he resists. But then he changes his mind and HOO BOY. Things get steamy!!!

Audrey and Aki walk down the sidewalk and they don’t know where they’re going, but they’re committed to getting there together. Zoya’s dad exits Webster Hall and Davis is driving by in a car. He offers to give him a ride. Mr. Lott tells him he basically lives two states away but Davis doesn’t mind. He opens the door and Mr. Lott hops in the car. At Ms. Keller’s apartment, she’s finally finished her writing submission. Jordan has fallen asleep, and her phone buzzes with the latest Gossip Girl update. She’s pleased with herself. She really can do it all! The episode ends with Jules and Zoya sitting on top of what is apparently the strongest glass table alive, swapping pastries in matching bathrobes and catching up on all the moments they’ve missed over the past several years.. Zoya blows out a candle, and I hope she wished for Julien to be nice because there have been an awful lot of shots fired since her arrival, and it’s time to put this rivalry to bed!

This is one of those episodes where the things we’ve been waiting to happen finally happen, and it’s just as fulfilling as I’d hoped it would be.

PREDICTIONS
I think Max will be too consumed with Rafa to be bothered with Aki and Audrey. They’ll notice a pattern change and keep an extra close eye on him for any clues. They learn about his secret relationship and their investment in his whereabouts makes them realize that they’re better off as friends. They force Max to choose. He picks neither. Do you think there are any available writing spots on Gossip Girl? I’m available and have way too much free time on my hands (clearly). Speaking of choosing (theme for the show), Ms. Keller’s writing submission is picked and she has to decide whether to focus on her writing career or the other one where she terrorizes minors for fun (things you can’t put on a resume).
